HOW TO CRISPEN PRODUCE


     There are three steps for keeping vegetables fresh, moist and
     high quality.

        Step#1
        n  Remove all yellow, heavily wilted and discolored parts
        n   Do NOT trim the roots on radishes, carrots, green onions   PRODUCE STORAGE GUIDE

        n   Do NOT remove leaves or stalks from the base of the   PRODUCE  STORAGE   RECOMMENDATION

           celery, lettuce or cabbage
                                                            Apples        32ºF    Store away from greens
        Step#2

        n  Soak the vegetable in tepid water (70-90°F) for 2-4    Bananas  56-62ºF  Never refrigerate
           minutes
        n   Iceberg should be placed core down in a tray or sink with   Broccoli  32ºF  Will last 10-14 days. Sprinkle with water
           about 2" of warm water                                                 or crushed ice to avoid dehydration
        n  Do not soak the lettuce                          Cabbage      32-35ºF  Wash and store in plastic bags
                                                                                  Wash and store in plastic bags. Store only
        Step#3
                                                            Carrots      32-40ºF  briefly, 5 days maximum. Allow 2-3 days
        n  Shake off or drain all water and place in clean plastic                at room temperature before serving
           bags or containers with small holes for drainage
                                                            Celery       32-35ºF  Wash, trim and store in plastic bags
        n  Pack vegetables loosely
        n  Place in the cooler for a minimum of 6 hours     Cucumbers    45-50ºF  Store only briefly


                                                            Grapes       32-35ºF  Highly perishable. Store only briefly

                                                            Lemons        50ºF    Will last 10-14 days

                                                                                  Avoid storing by or under the blower or by
                                                            Lettuce       32ºF    ethylene producing fruits. Keep dry, has a
                                                                                  very short shelf life

                                                            Onions       45-55ºF  Store out of the refrigerator

                                                            Oranges      38-43ºF  Will last 10-14 days
